Readnslate privacy policy
Who is responsible
Controller: Mikko Oskari Somerpalo, a solo developer based in Finland (EU), publishing as WhiteWSoft.
Postal address available on request by email.
Contact: readnslate.supp@hotmail.com. Support is email only; there is no phone support and no contact form.
The short version
We, the developer, do not receive your books, reading data, saved words or translations. They stay on your device. We receive only what you choose to send us, such as a support email, and the limited purchase information Google Play shows to developers.
Local-first, not zero-network
Readnslate reads DRM-free EPUB and text-based PDF books on Android 11 or later. There is no Readnslate account, login, cloud sync, advertising or Readnslate server. Readnslate itself has no analytics, no crash-reporting SDK, no advertising SDK and no tracking; the only telemetry in the app is Google ML Kit's own, described below.
The app has no storage permission of any kind. It never scans your device for books. A book is read only when you pick it in Android's file picker (Add books, which opens in your Downloads folder), open it with Readnslate, or share it to Readnslate, and it is then copied into the app's private storage. Your original file stays where it was.
Data stored on your device
Everything below stays in the app's private storage on your device. It supports reading, lookup, translation, your settings, the trial and offline Plus verification.
- Imported books (copies of the files you chose), their titles, authors, covers, reading positions, progress and, where a book declares one, its language.
- Saved Words and lookup history, including each word, its translation, its source sentence and its book. You can turn lookup history off in the app's settings.
- Reader settings: theme, text size, reading mode, languages and similar.
- Local translation caches: recent lookup results, and (Plus) paragraph translations stored as small files keyed by a hash of the paragraph's text.
- Trial status and verified purchase status. A verified Google Play receipt is cached so Plus keeps working offline. It is withdrawn only after Google Play has twice, at least a day apart, reported no purchase for the account in use, or has reported a refund or revocation.
- A flag for Google Play reviewer access, a code-based unlock used only by Google's app reviewers. The code itself is never stored.
- A pre-restore recovery copy, created when you restore a backup and kept until the next restore or until the app's storage is cleared.
- Downloaded language models: Google ML Kit languages for Standard translation, and Mozilla Bergamot packs for Enhanced translation.
Android automatic cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are disabled. The system does not copy Readnslate data to Google Drive.
What can use the network, and why
- Google ML Kit (Standard translation). It downloads language models from Google and then translates on the device. The download starts by itself after you choose your languages when the app first opens and when you open a book in a new language (over Wi-Fi only, unless you turn that setting off or tap Download now), or when you ask for it in Translation Packs; your book text is not sent to Google for translation. The SDK includes Google's telemetry transport, which starts with the app and periodically sends ML Kit's technical and usage information to Google over HTTPS: installation identifiers, device and app information, which ML Kit features and languages were used, and sizes and timings of requests. It never carries your book text or your translations. Readnslate cannot turn it off. Google's terms and privacy policy apply to this data.
- Enhanced translation packs (Plus). Packs are delivered through Google Play's on-device AI delivery. Downloading a pack tells Google Play which pack was requested, together with Play's usual device and app information; your words and passages are never sent. While a download is pending, the app asks Google Play for its status each time it comes to the foreground. Translation with a downloaded pack runs entirely on your device.
- Google Play Billing. Each time the app comes to the foreground (at most once every 30 seconds) it asks Google Play whether Readnslate Plus is owned by the Google account in use and what Plus costs, not only while the Plus page is open. Buying, acknowledging and restoring a purchase are the other calls. Google handles payment; the app never sees your card details. The app receives purchase confirmation data from Google (product, purchase state, order and token information) to verify the purchase, and stores a verified receipt locally. Google Play also shows us, the developer, limited order information in the Play Console, such as order ID, product, date and country. The Billing library's location component is excluded from the app, which has no location permission.
- Android text-to-speech. Pronunciation passes the selected text to the text-to-speech engine installed on your device. The engine is a separate provider with its own privacy practices; voice downloads are handled by it.
- Links you open. The Google Play listing, this website's help, privacy and support pages, Google's translation information, and the "Find free books" list (Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Wikisource and other public-domain libraries) open only when you tap them, in your browser, under those sites' policies.
- "Look up in another app". Hands the selected word to a dictionary or translator app you choose on your device. That app's privacy policy applies.
- Support email. Opens your own email app with a message to readnslate.supp@hotmail.com and nothing attached automatically. Emails you send reach a mailbox hosted by Microsoft (Outlook.com) and are kept only as long as needed to handle your request and any follow-up.
Please see Google's own terms and privacy policies for ML Kit, Google Play Billing and Google Play delivery, and the policies of your text-to-speech provider and of the apps, email services and websites you choose.
Permissions
Readnslate asks Android for: internet and network state (downloads, Google Play, links), and notifications (asked for only from the Translation Packs screen, to tell you when a pack is ready). Google's libraries add Google Play Billing and, for pack downloads, a foreground data-sync service with its wake lock and boot-completed permissions. There is no storage access (no "All files access", no media access) and no contacts, location, camera, microphone, SMS or phone permission.
Exports, retention and deletion
- Manual backups contain your library records, Saved Words, lookup history with its sentences, and settings. They do not contain the book files, purchases or entitlement data. Backups and Anki TSV exports go where you choose and are not encrypted by Readnslate; you control those copies.
- Removing a book from the library deletes the app's copy of the file and its cover. Its title, position and words are kept so the same file can reconnect them, unless you tick "Also erase saved data from this book".
- Without a Plus purchase, downloaded Enhanced packs stay on the device, unusable, for seven days after the trial ends, then are deleted. You can remove them sooner in Translation Packs.
- Clearing the app's storage or uninstalling removes all local data, including trial and purchase records. A purchase can be restored through Google Play.
- There is no Readnslate server copy to delete. Backups and exports you saved elsewhere must be deleted by you. Data that Google's SDKs collected is held by Google under its terms; Readnslate has no deletion route for it.
Legal bases and your rights
Most processing happens only on your device, and we do not receive that data. Where we do process personal data, the legal bases are: performing our contract with you (providing Readnslate Plus and verifying your purchase), our legitimate interest in answering the support requests you send us, and legal obligations (for example keeping purchase records where the law requires it). Google processes data for ML Kit, Google Play Billing and Google Play delivery under its own policies.
Where the GDPR applies, you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction and objection, and the right to withdraw consent where consent is the basis. We answer requests without undue delay and within one month. You may also complain to a data protection authority; in Finland that is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman. Write to the email address above to exercise your rights. On-device data is exported and deleted as described above; there is no Readnslate server copy.
Children
Readnslate is not directed at children. It does not ask for a date of birth and does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We publish any updated policy at this address with a new version number and date. If a change is material, we also say so in the app's update notes.
